Joana Schurr (she/her) is a feminist, queer artist born in March 1997 in Munich. She moved to Porto as a baby and lived there until 2017, year in which she moved to Caldas da Rainha to study Sound and Image at ESAD.cr, and where remained until 2022. Currently, she’s living and working in Berlin.
As a videoartist, she tests the static power, and other possible dynamics of moving images and scenography, wielding them as tools for observation and autobiography. With a confessional approach that exposes her own discomfort on camera, she transforms vulnerability into a medium for self-therapy, creating vivid tableaux vivants that merge the rawness of the visceral with the ethereal and symbolic, in an experimental domain.
Exploring themes of sexuality, trauma, identity, and regeneration, she delves deep into the animal emotional landscapes, seeking to stimulate sensations in the viewer through the convergence of sound, image, and text, rather than through direct comprehension of the subjects being addressed. Her vision often incorporates the use of violent images to evoke strong emotional responses in her audience.
In addition to her video art work, Joana integrated Berlin Atonal’s video team in 2023 and 2024 and back in Portugal she was a member of the Festival Impulso team.
